SS Manasoo

60 m/200 ft below Georgian Bay rests the coastal steamer Manasoo. complete with a 1927 Chevrolet Capitol Coupe, midship stairs, intact wheelhouse and engine room. artifacts are everywhere including a clock still hanging inside the pilothouse. located in 2018, it’s a stunning example of ship design from a bygone era.

by 1928, the aging Manasoo had been rebuilt and lengthened to 54m (178 ft) and she was now in service on Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) making stops at all ports between Owen Sound and Sault Ste. Marie. in September that same year, the Manasoo was hired by ranch owner Don Wallace who brought aboard his newly purchased Chevrolet Coupe on his journey North. his plan was to buy cattle from Manitoulin Island farms and ship them back to port at Owen Sound. after a successful business trip where 116 cattle were acquired, all were loaded on board along with 21 people and they steamed south into the open waters of Georgian Bay as an approaching storm closed in.
